When does the program start?

  • The course begins July 22, 2019.

How does the online boot camp work?

  • Students access this dynamic boot camp 100% online, learning full-stack web development through engaging exercises, videos, project work, quizzes, and more. The flexible format allows students to personalize their schedule and study remotely at the time that works best for them each week.
  • Students benefit from collaboration with others in the community and receive extensive on-demand support and weekly mentorship with an industry professional as they work to become job-ready developers.

Can I keep working while studying?

  • Yes. This online coding boot camp was designed for working adults, students, and busy professionals, allowing students to personalize their schedule from week to week.

How long is the online course?

  • Students will complete the online boot camp in 24 weeks.

Do you provide career planning support?

  • Yes. We offer all of our students career support and coaching, including portfolio reviews, resume assistance, and technical interview training.

Is the online curriculum the same as the in-class boot camp?

  • The online coding boot camp offers students the exact same outcome. Because the experience and learning model is fundamentally different, it requires different types of curricula. Additionally, the online coding program teaches two primary languages — Ruby on Rails and JavaScript.

Do I need previous experience in computer programming before enrolling?

  • No, previous experience is not required. While having some background can help, our course will get you up to speed and ready to get started on day one.

How much time should I commit to the online coding boot camp each week?

  • Students, on average, have committed approximately 25-30 hours to the program each week. While every student is different, this time can vary. In the online coding boot camp format, the program can be completed whenever is convenient for the student as long as they have a computer and internet access.

How does the online coding boot camp differ from the in-person boot camps?

  • Both boot camps teach the same thing first and foremost — how to think like and become a developer — but the online coding program starts with a different language, Ruby on Rails. Ruby is a useful starting language for self-paced students learning online coding for a few reasons:
    • It is more accessible and similar to English than many languages which make debugging easier
    • It has a robust online community for students to get help on their own (just like real developers!) in places like Stack Overflow

Will I be isolated from my teaching assistants and peers?

  • Students may be concerned about being isolated and not having the right support network in place when learning online. As part of the online coding boot camp, we’ve created a strong sense of community where you can engage and work with your peers, helping each other overcome problems, as it’s likely you’ll be working through the curriculum at roughly the same pace. Before your first day in the boot camp, you will be introduced to the other members of your cohort, and when you join the boot camp, you will be able to engage with other students through Slack. In addition to other students, you will have a network of staff members to keep you motivated and moving along. This includes TAs, mentors, and a Program Support Manager in addition to your Career Director and Profile Coach.

How often can I connect with TAs and mentors?

  • In our program, we have TAs who are available via Slack from 10am-10pm in your time zone who are ready, willing and able to help get you “unstuck.” They are also available on the weekends during daytime hours.
  • You will also be paired with a mentor who will meet with you for 24 1-hour 1:1s. The mentor is there to push you to the next level and to teach you “how to think like a developer.”

When do I get matched with my mentor and access to the online class?

  • Students receive first access to the online platform on the first day of class. After creating an account, students are prompted to complete the Day One Survey for mentor matching. We perform the match on our end during the first week, and students are notified of their “match” once all student responses are received. All students are matched by the end of the first week.

What technical requirements do I need for the online courses?

  • A reliable computer is required for this course. Either Mac or PC, with a minimum 8GB of RAM and a dual-core processor. If you’re unsure if your device meets the requirements, please check with our admissions advisor first and they will make sure you’re good to go.

Will I need to purchase online material or e-Books?

  • No, all that is needed for class is your laptop with the above-mentioned specifications.

Is there a default time zone for the online learning courses?

  • Central Daylight Time is the default time zone for online learning courses.

What sets your online coding program apart from other boot camp programs?

  • Students receive a Certificate of Completion from the UW Extended Campus, the only university-backed coding boot camp in Madison.
  • We offer a part-time, flexible schedule that allows working professionals to study web development at their own personalized pace without leaving work.
  • Students benefit from professional development services to prepare them for success as they work to advance or change careers.
  • Our curriculum is built based on in-demand technologies needed for the competitive web development industry.
